Cannes, 17 May (TASR) - Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) not only attended the meeting of European Union culture ministers in Cannes, France, but also showed her support for Slovak cinema, highlighting Slovakia's success in advancing to the finals for the award for a rapidly developing film destination, TASR was told by Culture Ministry's communications department head Petra Demkova on Sunday.
In the finals of the Global Production Awards 2026 in the Emerging Location category, Slovakia is competing against Spain, Canada, and the USA. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday (18 May) during the Cannes International Film Festival (CIFF).
"I'm glad that Slovakia succeeded against strong competition from dozens of countries around the world. Our natural scenery, history, monuments, customs, and traditions attract even the most discerning filmmakers," said Simkovicova.
Slovakia has presented to date 22 times its audiovisual works at the Cannes IFF. Slovak cinema has historically been presented in a joint pavilion with the Czech Republic, where it hosts specialised and targeted cooperation events intended primarily for Slovak and Czech film professionals, as well as international institutions focused on supporting and promoting the audiovisual industry.
