Bratislava, 15 May (TASR) - Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has expressed deep concern over the recent attacks by the Russian armed forces on western Ukraine, including those close to Slovakia's border.
The premier said this at a press conference held in Handlova (Trencin region) on Friday, adding that he hopes a ceasefire will be reached as soon as possible.
"I want to express great concern that such attacks are occurring so close to Slovakia's borders," stated Fico, adding that this is too close and that caution is necessary. He also said that he hopes peace will come as soon as possible. "However, it's not in our hands. If Europe continues to 'fuel' the war, it will last for a long time," he stated.
In response to a journalist's question as to why he didn't convene a Security Council session following the attacks, the premier said that he didn't need to make gestures and wasn't obliged to convene such a session automatically. "If a situation arose that posed a threat to us, I would convene the Security Council, I have no problem with doing so," he said. He also noted that a date for a joint Slovak-Ukrainian government session is being sought.
In addition, Fico commented on information regarding the cancelled visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Slovakia. According to the premier, the chancellor was supposed to engage in a private programme in Bratislava on 30 May, which was why Fico wanted to meet him for working talks on 29 May. It wasn't supposed to be an official visit. "I've taken note that his schedule has changed, so we'll meet another time," stated Fico, adding that he wouldn't make a sensation out of it.
