PS: Citizenship Act Insufficient, We're Filling Motion with Constitutional Court

Bratislava, 15 May (TASR) - The opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party views the State Citizenship Act as insufficient, as LGBTI people are being involuntarily deprived of their Slovak citizenship in some cases, parliamentary human rights committee head Lucia Plavakova (PS) told a news conference on Friday, adding that the party is filing a complaint with the Constitutional Court in this connection.
"On the one hand, the state citizenship is a matter of identity, but at the same time it entails rights and obligations. However, as a result of the current wording of the law, LGBTI people are being deprived of their Slovak identity, as well as all the rights associated with it. As there is no will in Parliament to change this unacceptable situation, we're filing a motion with the Constitutional Court," said Plavakova.
She specified that many LGBTI people marry abroad, and some of them also acquire the citizenship of their spouses as a result. "Under the Slovak citizenship law, however, they automatically lose their Slovak citizenship in such cases. The Slovak state refuses to apply the exception from losing citizenship in the case of marriage to same-sex couples," added Plavakova.
