Bratislava, 10 May (TASR) - What was originally a biogas plant in the village of Horovce (Trencin region) has become the largest biomethane plant in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, TASR has learnt from a press release by the Reticulum investment group and AB Energy, the company that carried out the transformation.
The plant can supply 57,000 MWh of biomethane annually to the gas pipeline. This biomethane is produced in Horovce from biodegradable waste, primarily from the food industry.
"The biomethane plant in Horovce is now a technological benchmark in the Central European region and demonstrates a specific path toward the decarbonisation of the gas industry. I'm pleased that we have a facility right here in Slovakia that ranks among the leaders in the field," said chairman of the Slovak Biogas Association Vladimir Sosovicka.
According to the companies, the plant is capable of producing not only electricity and heat from waste and otherwise unusable biodegradable raw materials, but also of purifying biogas into biomethane, which is subsequently pushed into the gas distribution network and used in both households and industry.
This is the fourth biomethane plant to be launched in Slovakia, while 14 biomethane plants already produce green gas in the Czech Republic. According to a report by the European Biogas Association (EBA), both the Czech Republic and Slovakia are markets in the early stages of development. Their current production accounts for less than 1 percent of European biomethane production.
