Premier: Let's Not Forget That Freedom and Peace Came to Slovakia from East

Liptovsky Mikulas, 10 May (TASR) - Freedom and peace came to Slovakia from the East, let's not forget that, said Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) in a speech he delivered during the celebrations of the 81st anniversary of the end of WWII held in Liptovsky Mikulas (Zilina region) on Sunday. Fico stressed the need to adhere to three pillars: historical truth, respect for international law, and peace. "The world is in disarray, nothing works. No one respects anything anymore. The powerful ones do whatever they want. International law doesn't apply, the European Union is weak, the UN is meaningless, and NATO is gradually falling apart before our eyes," claims the premier. He therefore believes that three pillars should be adhered to. The first one, he said, is historical truth that freedom and peace came to Slovakia from the East. "At the same time, please let's not forget the victims connected with the opening of the Second Front in Normandy. Please, let's not forget the many Romanian soldiers who died liberating Slovakia. Let's not forget the contribution of the United States in the fighting in the Pacific," he stressed. The second thing that we must not forget as a small country is the consistent respect for international law, stated Fico. "Slovakia is not a country that has a big army, thousands of tanks, thousands of bombers and military fighter jets. We can address conflicts and we can survive only if we consistently insist on the observance of international law and promote this approach in every single negotiation," he said. Fico identified peace as the third pillar. "Peace is like love, it must be cared for, it must be given energy, it doesn't just persist on its own," he noted, calling on everyone to shout to the whole world, as a message from the celebrations of the victory over fascism and the end of WWII, one single word above all, and that is peace. ko
