Bratislava, 7 May (TASR) - Retail revenues in Slovakia rose by 6.2 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) in March 2026, with seven out of nine retail segments posting increases, the Statistics Office reported on Thursday.
After seasonal adjustment, retail sales grew by 2.7 percent in monthly terms.
The positive result was mainly driven by the dynamic increase in revenues in the largest segment in terms of market share: hypermarkets and supermarkets (non-specialised stores), going up by 7.3 percent, partly thanks to Easter shopping. The second significant factor was the more than 22-percent growth in revenues of petrol stations, which can be ascribed chiefly to increase in petrol and diesel prices.
The favourable development was also supported by a 5.8-percent increase in revenues of specialised stores selling other goods, including drugstores, pharmacies, clothing and footwear shops, as well as certain household fuels. Growth in revenues also accelerated to 6.7 percent in hobby stores, furniture and electronics stores (specialised stores selling other household goods).
The overall y-o-y development of retail revenues was dampened by declines in e-shops, including mail-order shops (entities without outlets), as well as in specialised stores selling food, beverages and tobacco.
In total for the first three months of 2026, retail revenues in fixed prices remained roughly at the level seen a year ago (+0.1 percent), with five out of nine retail segments recording y-o-y increases.
