CRIF: 595 Personal Bankruptcies in March, Highest Number in Presov Region

Bratislava, 2 May (TASR) - A total of 595 Slovaks went bankrupt in March 2026, up by 20.7 percent from February and the highest figure seen so far in 2026, according to an analysis published by CRIF – the Slovak Credit Bureau, which manages the credit registries of banking and non-banking houses.
"As many as 586 debtors (98.5 percent) opted for bankruptcy, while the rest (nine) opted for instalment calendars. Of the total number of personal bankruptcies declared in March, 545 (93 percent) were declared for the assets of private individuals and 41 for the assets of entrepreneurs," stated CRIF chief analyst Jana Markova.
The highest number of personal bankruptcies was reported in Presov region, where 123 people went bankrupt. It was followed by Nitra region with 103. The fewest bankruptcies (43) were recorded in Zilina region. Kosice region recorded 96 individuals who filed for bankruptcy, Banska Bystrica 82 and Bratislava 50 debtors. Trencin and Trnava regions posted 49 debtors each.
The CRIF analysis confirmed the trend of male prevalence, with 409 men (almost 75 percent of the total number) going bankrupt in March, compared to 64 percent reported a year ago. For both genders personal bankruptcy is resorted to overwhelmingly by people with only primary and secondary education, with their share as high as over 97 percent in March. The remainder were 11 men and five women with university education.
In March, 11 men aged 70–79 went bankrupt, which is the highest number in this group seen so far this year. Three women in their seventies also declared bankruptcy in the monitored month. The oldest man was 77, while the oldest woman was 78.
Homeless people accounted for 14.2 percent of the total number of those falling into bankruptcy in March, with their number reaching 83. Twelve married couples and 18 people with family ties went bankrupt in March as well.
