Bratislava, 1 May (TASR) - The Slovak Towns and Villages Association (ZMOS) has highlighted, on the occasion of May Day and the anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the European Union, the importance of work as one of the fundamental social values, as well as the significance of European cooperation for the development of towns and municipalities. "On the occasion of Labour Day we recall the importance of work as one of the fundamental social values that deserves respect, dignified conditions and adequate remuneration," said ZMOS chair Jozef Bozik, adding that work by people across all sectors of society — from the public sector through the private sphere to services — creates values that are reflected in the quality of life, stability and development of the country. Bozik also noted that Slovakia is marking the anniversary of its accession to the European Union, which represents an important milestone for the development of the regions. "The European Union is for towns and municipalities a key and often only stable source of investment in infrastructure and public services, improving the quality of life of the inhabitants," underlined Bozik, adding that thanks to European resources it is possible to implement projects that would not otherwise be feasible. According to Bozik, ZMOS has long supported Slovakia's pro-European orientation, and local authorities clearly align themselves with the European Union as a space of stability, cooperation and development that brings tangible results for people in every region. "Slovakia's development starts in towns and municipalities. If we want it to be sustainable and balanced in the long term, we need strong local authorities and at the same time for Slovakia to be firmly anchored in the European Union," stated the ZMOS chair. mf/df
