Presov, 28 April (TASR) - MP and Kezmarok (Presov region) mayor Jan Ferencak (Independent) is currently providing testimony at the Police Corps District Directorate in Presov regarding the physical assault on him that took place in Kezmarok on Saturday (25 April).
"I'm going there as the aggrieved party, and I'll describe the whole story and all the events that happened to an investigator. The case has been taken over by the Office to Combat Organised Crime," Ferencak told journalists before attending the questioning. He added that he underwent a medical examination at a GP's surgery earlier on Tuesday.
"My hearing is very important for the procedural aspect so that the investigator can continue. Even this cowardly act that happened to me, when I was assaulted from behind and from the side with a blow to the face, hasn't intimidated me," said Ferencak.
When asked whether it was a politically motivated attack, he replied that he can't rule it out. "Because I can't even imagine what other motive there could have been. Such actions are unacceptable in a society that guarantees safety for every citizen," he said.
Ferencak said that he's actively communicating with the Office for the Protection of Constitutional Officials and is currently considering what measures will be taken to ensure that he and his relatives are protected. He's only learned information about the perpetrator from the media. He firmly believes that whoever committed this violent act will be apprehended and held accountable.
The Police Corps Presidium told TASR that, given the ongoing procedural acts, it is currently not possible to provide further details about the case. "We will also not comment on the questioning of specific individuals or on the content of their statements," added the Presidium's spokesperson Lea Vilhanova. She added that the information about the detention of a person suspected of committing the act is not true.
Ferencak was physically assaulted over the weekend in the presence of his daughter when an unknown attacker struck him in the head. Presov Region Police later confirmed that a Kezmarok investigator had launched an criminal investigation into the suspicion of assault on a public official and disorderly conduct.
