Kosice, 24 April (TASR) - The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) represents the supreme judicial authority for the national courts of all member states, a unique source of interpretation of European Union law, a source of legal certainty within the European Union, and a guarantee of equality before the law, Constitutional Court chair Ivan Fiacan remarked following a meeting with President of the Court of Justice of the European Union Koen Lenaerts, who visited the Constitutional Court on Friday, TASR was told by the court's spokesperson Martina Ferencova.
Fiacan further noted that the Constitutional Court has on several occasions referred preliminary questions to the Court of Justice with the aim of ensuring consistency in its decision-making practices in accordance with EU law. "The visit by the president of this judicial authority confirms effective communication and active mutual cooperation in an effort to protect fundamental rights and the principles of the rule of law, the protection of the fundamental human rights and freedoms of people living in our country, and the strengthening of the common values upon which the mutual relations of EU-member states are based," he said.
Lenaerts and the constitutional judges discussed the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the CJEU. The visit's programme also included his expert lecture titled 'On values and structures: The constitutionalism of the European Union and national constitutional courts'. In his presentation, he emphasised in particular the need to consistently protect the principles of the democratic rule of law.
