KDH Calls on Fico to Explain Magyar's Remarks on Transporting Migrants to Border

Bratislava, 15 April (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) have called on Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to explain the remarks made by Peter Magyar, the leader of the victorious Tisza party and candidate for Hungarian prime minister. According to KDH, these remarks suggest that the transport of migrants to the Slovak border was organised prior to the last Slovak elections. The opposition 'Slovakia' party claims that the wave of migration wasn't accidental but the result of political calculation, and speaks of a deliberately created crisis. "KDH will initiate the convening of a meeting of the House defence and security committee and summoning Prime Minister Robert Fico and Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok [Voice-SD] to address this matter. We'll ask the following questions: Did Robert Fico arrange for migrants to be present at the borders to scare people and manipulate public sentiment? Does he no longer mind migrants in Slovakia as long as they serve his political goals? Did Viktor Orban's Hungary influence the Slovak elections in this way?" stated member of the defence and security committee Andrea Turcanova (KDH). The 'Slovakia' party claims that Magyar's remarks confirmed that the wave of migration ahead of the Slovak elections was no coincidence, but the result of "political calculation". "Even as the situation at the Slovak-Hungarian border was deteriorating, we warned that the massive influx of migrants from the Serbian-Hungarian Schengen border was no coincidence. Today we have confirmation that Hungary, under the leadership of Viktor Orban, systematically released more than 2,200 smugglers while simultaneously facilitating the movement of migrants toward Slovakia," maintained former interior minister Roman Mikulec ('Slovakia'-'For the People' caucus). The party has also called for a thorough investigation of the entire matter. In his statement, Magyar noted that, unlike Hungary's current Premier Viktor Orban, he won't release 2,200 legally convicted migrant smugglers from Hungarian prisons. He also said that "we won't bring migrants to the Slovak border if that is the interest of our 'socialist friend' in the election campaign". am
