Bratislava, 9 April (TASR) - According to preliminary data, Slovakia exported goods worth €9.3 billion in February 2026, down 1.3 percent year-on-year (y-o-y), while imports fell by 2.5 percent to €8.9 billion, with the trade balance returning to a surplus of €321.6 million after two months of deficits, improving by €111.4 million y-o-y, the Statistics Office reported on Thursday, adding that exports fell for the second consecutive month and imports for the third. Concerning the structure of exports, half of the ten categories showed annual declines. A nearly 24-percent drop in the category of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, which includes energy carriers, had the most significant impact on developments in exports. On the import side, six of the ten categories saw decreases, with the biggest impact on overall import developments again coming from the category of mineral fuels (including oil, electricity and natural gas), which posted a y-o-y decline of 16 percent. Machinery and transport equipment remained the most-frequently traded category in February 2026, making up almost 63 percent of overall exports and more than 47 percent of overall imports. In February, more than 78 percent of Slovakia's exports went to other EU countries, falling by 1 percent y-o-y, while imports from them made up 66 percent of the country's total imports, rising by nearly 5 percent y-o-y. Exports to non-EU countries fell by 3 percent, and imports from them were more than 14 percent lower than the year before. Foreign trade with other EU-member states recorded a surplus of almost €1.4 billion, while with non-EU countries it posted a deficit of more than €1 billion. In the first two months of this year, exports fell by 1.5 percent y-o-y to €17.7 billion, while imports dropped by 1.8 percent to €17.6 billion. Overall, foreign trade posted a surplus of €107.4 million, while for the same period in 2025 the surplus was at €57.7 million. According to revised figures for January 2026, Slovakia's exports decreased by 1.8 percent y-o-y to €8.4 billion, while imports fell by 1 percent to €8.7 billion.
