Stats: Harvest of Agricultural Crops Exceptionally Successful in 2025

dnes 19:02
Bratislava, 4 April (TASR) - For farmers in Slovakia, 2025 was a favourable year in terms of the most widely grown crops, with wheat, maize, oil-seed rape and potatoes all seeing significant year-on-year (y-o-y) increases in yields, the Statistics Office has reported. The above-average harvest for most commodities was driven not only by an increase in the harvested area but, more importantly, by higher yields per hectare, which showed strong growth both y-o-y and when compared to the five-year average. The total wheat harvest reached nearly 2.3 million tonnes in 2025, which was one-fifth more than in 2024. The increase in production by 380,000 tonnes was mainly due to a 9-percent y-o-y expansion of harvested area and a nearly 10-percent higher yield per hectare. The wheat yield per hectare reached six tonnes (up 0.5 tonnes y-o-y). Maize also saw an increase in yield last year, with producers harvesting a total of 1.3 million tonnes. The harvest volume was up by as much as 22 percent y-o-y and exceeded the average of the previous five years by just under 7 percent. Farmers harvested an average of 8.2 tonnes of maize per hectare, a fifth more than the average for the previous five years. The total oil-seed rape harvest exceeded 457,000 tonnes, with production up 17.5 percent y-o-y. Although the total harvested area decreased by nearly 10 percent y-o-y, the yield per hectare was 30-percent higher. The potato harvest in 2025 reached nearly 200,000 tonnes. The harvest volume was more than 15 percent higher y-o-y and exceeded the average for the previous five years by as much as 30 percent. Sugar beet production declined last year, with a total harvest of 1.2 million tonnes. The harvest volume was 12-percent lower y-o-y. Despite a higher y-o-y yield of 67 tonnes per hectare, the harvest was negatively impacted by a 23-percent reduction in the harvested area. The vegetable harvest yielded 172,000 tonnes. The harvest volume was nearly 23 percent higher y-o-y and exceeded the average for the previous five years by as much as 25 percent. The harvest was influenced by a 17-percent y-o-y increase in the harvested area and a nearly 5-percent higher yield per hectare. am/df/mf
