Bratislava, 31 March (TASR) - Georgia's head of state will visit Slovakia for the first time in nine years, with Mikheil Kavelashvili due to be welcomed at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava by President Peter Pellegrini on Thursday (2 April), the President Office's press department has informed TASR. The last Georgian president to pay a visit to Slovakia was Giorgi Margvelashvili in 2017. "The meeting between the heads of state is an opportunity to speak openly about current issues and, at the same time, reaffirm interest in continuing a constructive dialogue with Georgia," stated the President's Office. Georgia's membership of the European Union, the current geopolitical situation in the world and the deepening of economic cooperation between Slovakia and Georgia, such as in the fields of energy, renewable energy sources and innovation, will be high on the agenda of the two presidents' talks. "The signing of a economic cooperation agreement in 2025 established a framework for further economic growth, the potential of which is still great. Since 2019, Georgia has also been among the priority countries of Slovak development cooperation," added the press department. This will be President Kavelashvili's first visit to an EU-member country since he assumed office in 2024. During the visit, he's also scheduled to meet House Chair Richard Rasi and Economy Minister Denisa Sakova (both Voice-SD). He will join the Slovak president in laying wreaths at the Gate of Freedom memorial in Bratislava's borough of Devin. The Georgian president will return to his homeland on Friday (3 April). ko/df
