Coalition SNS Wants to Increase Funeral Allowances

Bratislava, 30 March (TASR) - The funeral allowance could be increased from the current €200 to €500, as a group of MPs for the coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) wants to push through the change via an amendment to the funeral allowance law that they've submitted to Parliament. "The reason for submitting the bill is the continued rise in the cost of funeral services and other expenditures associated with arranging a funeral, as a result of which the current level of the contribution no longer reflects real costs. According to available indicative data, the total cost of a funeral in Slovakia in general ranges between €1,000 and €3,000. An allowance of €200 therefore currently fails to cover even 30 percent of these costs," stated the submitters of the bill. The SNS MPs also pointed to the amounts of funeral allowances in neighbouring countries. "In the Czech Republic, the funeral allowance is set at a fixed amount of 5,000 CZK [around €200]. In Poland, the sum increased to 7,000 PLN as of 1 January 2026, which is equivalent to almost €1,000. The current comparison shows that Slovak legislation remains lower in relation to comparable countries in the region and only reflects the actual costs associated with a funeral to a limited extent," they added. If approved, the amendment might take effect as of 1 January 2027. ko/df
