NBS stated that the number of counterfeit banknotes has been stable over the long term and is relatively low when compared to other eurozone countries. The most commonly discovered counterfeits were 50 and 100-euro banknotes.
In addition, 2,813 counterfeit euro coins were seized last year, 9.7 percent fewer than in 2024. The vast majority of these counterfeits were two-euro coins.
NBS stated that 2025 saw only four counterfeit euro banknotes per million banknotes in circulation (compared to 14 per million across the entire eurozone) and three counterfeit euro coins per million coins. According to NBS, the likelihood of encountering a counterfeit euro banknote or coin in everyday transactions is low, therefore.
