Bratislava, 1 March (TASR) - The number of cyberattacks in Slovakia grew sharply in 2025, mostly in the case of botnet attacks aimed at putting systems out of operation, according to the 2025 annual report by SK-NIC as the administrator of the .sk top-level domain. Ransomware attacks made up a smaller share, but they remained among the highest-risk incidents. Alongside the growing use of artificial intelligence, 2025 saw both an increase in the number and diversity of cyberattacks. As many as 73 percent of malicious files reached Slovak organisations via email, which remains the most frequent method for delivering a malicious payload. "The year 2025 clearly showed that cyber-security is a topic that needs to be addressed in Slovakia. Awareness-raising is particularly important, and it would be great to see this topic finally become a systemic part of education starting at primary schools. Everyone is potentially at risk, as everyone uses the internet or electronic devices," said SK-NIC general director Peter Biro. Recognised since the mid-1990s by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which manages the DNS root zone, SK-NIC is the administrator of the .sk top-level. Before changing its name to SK-NIC in 2006, it was previously known as EUNET Slovakia and, as of 1999, as EuroWeb Slovakia. jrg/df
