Bratislava, 28 February (TASR) - Ukrainian workers are serving as a contribution to the Slovak labour market, and their inclusion represents an opportunity for the economy, not a burden, stated the Association of Employers' Unions (AZZZ) in connection with the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which triggered a wave of migration during which tens of thousands of people found refuge in Slovakia.
According to the association, many of the Ukrainians have gradually integrated themselves into society and are also making a significant contribution to the Slovak labour market.
AZZZ stated that the Slovak labour market has been tense in some sectors for a long time but that Ukrainian workers are significantly contributing towards stabilising the situation. This is especially true when it comes to the automotive industry, construction sector, logistics and the hospitality segment, i.e. accommodation and catering services. The association pointed out that Ukrainians also fill posts that have only little demand among the domestic workforce or for which the market lacks qualified specialists.
The association stated that if these workers remain concentrated mainly in posts that fail to match their qualifications, this will mean a wasted opportunity not only for employers, but also for the whole economy in the long term. "We view the arrival of Ukrainian nationals to our labour market primarily as an opportunity. These people have helped us to stabilise sectors that have long struggled with a shortage of labour. However, our common challenge remains to utilise their real professional potential in a better manner. If we can manage to integrate them into posts corresponding with their qualifications, we'll not only gain more satisfied employees, but also higher-added value for the entire Slovak economy," stated AZZZ president Rastislav Machunka.
According to AZZZ, Ukrainian employees also contribute to public finances. Through their economic activity, they pay income tax, levies to social- and health-insurance funds, and also make VAT payments when consuming goods and services.
