Gdansk/Poprad, 27 February (TASR-correspondent) - According to unofficial information, Wizz Air's flight connection between the city of Gdansk in northern Poland and Poprad in Presov region will be suspended during the summer months despite high occupancy rates and won't resume until September, Polish transport expert Jakub Loginow posted on social media on Friday, citing a source from Slovakia that was involved in negotiations on the introduction of the route, reports a TASR correspondent in Warsaw.
The route was also established thanks to financial support from Slovak local authorities and tourism organisations. According to Loginow, the low-cost airline business model is also based on indirect subsidies in the form of regional promotion support, which has been criticised by some rail transport experts.
According to available information, the Slovak side expected closer cooperation with Pomeranian province, but interest from the Polish side is reportedly limited. Loginow pointed out the importance of cooperation between Pomerania and Presov region and towns such as Poprad, Vysoke Tatry, Kosice, and Presov, not only in the field of tourism but also in the exchange of experiences.
According to him, stable transport connections are key to developing relations. The long-term goal should be rail transport in particular, but for now, the priority should remain maintaining a year-round air link between Poprad and Gdansk.
