Bratislava, 25 February (TASR) - The opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party has filed a motion with the Supreme Audit Office (NKU) regarding the reconstruction of the future Defence Ministry's headquarters in the building of a former student dormitory in Bratislava known as Kukurica [The Corn on the Cob — due to the building's shape], PS MP Zuzana Stevulova told a press conference on Wednesday, citing a waste of public funds as the reason. "First it was a moss wall, then a huge LED screen running contrary to the zoning plan. Later on, we've learnt about overpriced kitchenettes, appliances from premium brands, overpriced interior doors and facades. And finally, there were urinals for €600," stated Stevulova, adding that Slovakia's economic situation is currently deteriorating. PS has also urged NKU to deal with the case already this year. The opposition has long criticised the reconstruction of the building. Complaints have also been lodged by people living in the surrounding area who have been bothered by light from the LED screen. In addition, the Value for Money department at the Finance Ministry has repeatedly recommended that the Defence Ministry should prepare an occupancy plan for the premises, fearing insufficient use of the building. The Defence Ministry has so far denied any wrongdoing. jrg/mcs
