Klenov/Bratislava, 18 February (TASR) – An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in the village of Klenov in the Presov region has been confirmed, the State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS) reported in its social media post on Wednesday.
Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza in three dead birds kept in captivity.
According to the authority, three birds – a little owl, a Eurasian eagle-owl and a barn owl — died at the clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice. Laboratory examinations subsequently confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza.
"The Regional Veterinary and Food Administration immediately ordered the breeder to implement the necessary measures and the breeding facility is under veterinary supervision. Initial disinfection, mechanical cleaning and subsequent disinfection of the premises have been carried out," the SVPS stated.
Additional samples have been taken from the remaining six birds for virological testing, which will determine further steps regarding the breeding facility.
"Although protection zones are not being declared in this case, poultry breeders should increase vigilance and strictly adhere to biosecurity measures – in particular preventing contact with wild birds and ensuring disinfection at entry and exit points of premises where poultry or other captive birds are kept," the SVPS warned.
