Bratislava, 15 February (TASR) - Slovakia and the US are launching the implementation phase of their strategic agreement in the field of civil nuclear energy, the Economy Ministry told TASR on Sunday, adding that following the signing of the intergovernmental agreement in Washington on 16 January, a Steering Committee will begin its work to coordinate the development of Slovakia's civil nuclear programme.
"The transition of the intergovernmental agreement to the implementation phase is a fundamental strategic step for Slovakia. Our partnership with the United States thus gains a clear management structure and allows us to fully develop the potential of civil nuclear energy in mutual dialogue," said Vice-Premier and Economy Minister Denisa Sakova (Voice-SD), pointing out that the project is an investment not only in Slovakia's energy security but also in the technological advancement and future competitiveness of businesses.
The setting up of the Steering Committee officially launched the implementation of the intergovernmental agreement. "Both partner countries thus confirm their readiness to move the strategic partnership into a specific, coordinated, and measurable phase of cooperation," stated the ministry, adding that this is a significant milestone that will strengthen Slovakia's energy security, support technological sovereignty, and increase the competitiveness of domestic industry, while creating a stable framework for the long-term development of civil nuclear energy.
The ministry added that the committee is chaired by Deputy Assistant Secretary of International Affairs at the US Department of Energy Tommy Joyce, and the Slovak economy minister.
