PS: Suspension of Penal Code Changes by Constitutional Court Represents Success

Bratislava, 11 February (TASR) - It's a clear success that amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code have been suspended by the Constitutional Court and that the remainder of the motion has been accepted for further proceedings, the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party stated on social media on Wednesday in response to the court's decision concerning cooperating defendants.
The party recalled that it's described the adopted legislation as unconstitutional from the outset. "This is exactly what quality opposition work looks like. Instead of empty talk, we submit expert arguments that can stop the outrages committed by this government," it added.
PS chair Michal Simecka described the court's decision as a victory for reason and the rule of law. "A tough week for Tibor Gaspar and the governing coalition, and a good week for justice in Slovakia," said Simecka at a press conference on Wednesday in response to a journalist's question.
Earlier in the day, the Constitutional Court suspended the effect of an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code concerning the inadmissibility of evidence obtained from a cooperating defendant. It didn't grant a request to suspend the remainder of the amendment to the Criminal Code adopted by Parliament last December. The decisions relate to a submission by a group of opposition MPs, which the court has accepted for further proceedings.
