Bratislava, 11 February (TASR) - The number of people staying in tourist accommodation facilities in Slovakia rose by 14.1 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 466,000 in December 2025, the Statistics Office reported on Wednesday.
This was the most successful December ever for accommodation providers, as the number of guests surpassed the record set in December of the pre-pandemic year of 2019 by 7.3 percent.
Guests spent almost 1.1 million nights in hotels and guest houses in December, up 13.5 percent from the year before, with the average length of stay equalling 2.3 nights.
The above-average growth in the number of nights can be ascribed to a record number of nights spent by foreign visitors in Slovakia in December - 418,000 nights in hotels and guest houses, which was some 12 percent more than in December 2019, which was the most successful December previously.
Domestic clientele made up almost two thirds of all visitors, with their number going up by 7.3 percent to 275,000 in December. This was the highest figure ever, exceeding the record set in December 2019 by 1 percent.
The positive December data was mainly a result of the big increase in the number of foreign visitors accommodated in Slovak facilities. The figure went up by one quarter y-o-y to 192,000 and even exceeded the figure for December 2019 by 18 percent (30,000 guests).
December brought y-o-y improvements for accommodation providers in all eight regions of the country. The number of visitors increased from 2.2 percent in Banska Bystrica region up to 23.8 percent in Zilina region. Bratislava region has long recorded the highest number of accommodated guests (more than 138,000).
Zilina region was the other one to exceed the 100,000-visitor threshold, with almost 111,000 guests accommodated in December. Presov region was the third-most visited one, with over 85,000 tourists using accommodation services there. These three regions together accounted for as much as 72 percent of Slovakia's total visitor numbers in December.
