Bratislava, 6 February (TASR) - According to preliminary data, Slovakia ended last year with a trade-balance surplus of €2.7 billion, an improvement of €63.7 million from the year before, the Statistics Office reported on Friday. The slight year-on-year (y-o-y) improvement can chiefly be ascribed to a significantly lower deficit in December, as the cumulative trade balance for January-November 2025 was worse than in 2024. Since 2010, when a methodological change in reporting was introduced, exports of goods have usually exceeded imports, with the sole exception being in 2022, when imports surpassed exports by €4.5 billion. Slovakia's exports for the whole of last year grew by 3.7 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) to almost €111 billion, while imports went up by 3.8 percent y-o-y to stand at over €108 billion. Both exports and imports thus exceeded €100 billion once again, reaching their highest levels since 2010. In terms of main economic groupings, exports to other EU countries were up by 4 percent y-o-y, accounting for 78 percent of the Slovakia's total exports, while imports from other EU countries rose by over 2 percent to make up 63 percent of exports. Exports to non-EU countries in 2025 were 1 percent higher than a year ago, while imports from these countries rose by some 7 percent. Slovakia had a positive trade balance with other EU countries, with the surplus reaching over €18 billion, up more than €2 billion from 2024. Meanwhile, Slovakia's trade balance with non-EU countries was negative, with the deficit amounting to €16 billion, an increase of over €2 billion. ko/df
