Torun, 30 January (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia on Thursday (29 January) opened a new honorary consular office in Poland, based in Torun, whose consular district covers the Kuyavian-Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian Voivodeships in the north of the country, TASR's Warsaw correspondent has learnt from the Slovak Embassy in Warsaw. Slovak soldiers are serving at the NATO training centre in the region. According to the embassy, the new consulate should contribute towards developing cooperation between Slovakia and the regions of northern Poland, especially in the areas of economic cooperation, regional contacts and citizen support. The office will be headed by Honorary Consul Jakub Piszczek. Representatives of the Polish government, regional and local authorities and diplomatic corps, as well as the business, academic and cultural communities attended the consulate's opening ceremony. Slovakia was represented by Slovak Ambassador to Poland Andrea Elschekova Matisova. "I hope that the new office in Torun will become not only a place for meetings, trust and new initiatives, but also one that will confirm that Slovakia and Poland are not just neighbours on the map, but also partners who understand one another, inspire each other and are able to cooperate for the common good," said the ambassador. According to her, honorary consulates play an important role in developing relations with regions and in creating space for new forms of cooperation. The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is an industrial region of Poland with a developing academic environment and economic and investment ties to Slovakia. The new diplomatic office follows up on the previous honorary Slovak consulate in this Polish region, which was based in Bydgoszcz between 2015 and 2024. ko/df
