Bratislava, 29 January (TASR) – Members of Parliament must always act with regard to the public interest when performing their duties, it follows from the ethics code approved by the House on Thursday together with an amendment to the Rules of Procedure. The ethics code is intended to set standards and rules for MPs' conduct and behaviour. MPs should refrain from personal insults, vulgar language and expressions that demean the human dignity of another person. "An MP acts honourably, responsibly and conscientiously, in line with professional care, the public interest and good morals. An MP shall refrain from conduct that could unduly endanger or damage public trust in the National Council. An MP communicates with the public, employees of the National Council's Office and with other MPs respectfully, politely and in accordance with standards of decent behaviour," reads the approved ethics code. It also says that information obtained in the performance of office or in connection with it must not be used by an MP as a tool to gain "personal, material or other benefit or advantage for themselves or others, nor used to the detriment of another person or group of persons". The ethics code also regulates dress rules. "Formal attire is considered to be a men's suit with a shirt or decent trousers with a jacket and shirt for men, and a women's suit, trousers or skirt with a top or a dress suitable for formal occasions for women, as well as formal footwear," the document states. Sportswear, including T-shirts and hoodies, or sports shoes are banned. An MP may place stickers and symbols of personal identity or belief on their personal electronic devices, but must ensure that they are not visible during their appearance at the lectern in the parliamentary chamber. An MP who violates the code will be subject to disciplinary authority as regulated by Parliament's Rules of Procedure. mf
