Bratislava, 27 January (TASR) - The proposed code of ethics for MPs constitutes unacceptable interference in fundamental rights, said MPs from the 'Slovakia'-'For the People' caucus on Tuesday, with caucus head Michal Sipos describing the code of ethics as a tool for bullying the opposition.
"It's sick. In my opinion, this is a breach of people's constitutional rights. Freedom of speech is the foundation of democracy. If opposition MPs are to be fined for expressing their views on the current government, then this government is sick and should go as soon as possible," stated MP Julius Jakab.
MP Gabor Grendel also pointed to what he called dangerous subjectivity and the concentration of power in the hands of the coalition.
"Who is to determine which word is still acceptable and which isn't? Will there be a fine for the word 'scoundrel' but not for 'rascal'? Furthermore, the decisions concerning sanctions will be made by the coalition majority in the House mandate and immunity committee. This is outrageous and constitutes bullying," stated Grendel.
According to the MPs, the postponement of laws vetoed by President Peter Pellegrini indicates rifts in the coalition.
"The coalition is at odds with itself and hasn't reached agreement. Voice-SD is bothered by one thing, the Slovak National Party [SNS] by another. They promised to govern in harmony, but the reality is marked by chaos and quarrels, according to which they are even adapting the session agenda," said Grendel.
