Zilina, 22 January (TASR) - The reconstruction of the railway station building in Zilina could begin in 2028, director of rail infrastructure operator ZSR Miroslav Garaj told a press briefing on Thursday on the occasion of the launch of the modernised Zilina railway hub.
The reconstruction of the original station building wasn't part of the EU-funded railway hub modernisation project. "We're currently in the project preparation stage, specifically in the contractor selection phase. My estimate is approximately one year to 18 months of design work. We could start the actual construction work around 2028," said Garaj.
The ZSR head estimated that the construction work will take a year and a half. "Part of the station is a historical monument, so the work will be challenging, but I expect the station to be fully operational again by 2029-2030," added Garaj.
The modernisation of the Zilina railway hub was the largest investment project in the history of rail transport in Slovakia. The project covered approximately 14 kilometres in the east-west direction and 2.3 kilometres in the north-south direction. The project was financed via EU funds.
