SaS Submits Resolution in Support of Greenland to Parliament

Bratislava, 21 January (TASR) - The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party is submitting a resolution to Parliament via which Parliament would unequivocally support the territorial integrity of Denmark, of which Greenland is a part, and reject any violation of international law, including annexations, party representatives told a news conference on Wednesday. "We'll call on Slovakia to simply point out that any change in international law, annexation, any such fundamental changes are unacceptable and that Slovakia stands unequivocally and fully behind the Kingdom of Denmark and its territorial integrity, as this also concerns us, our security and future," said MP Juraj Krupa (SaS). SaS demands that Slovakia should clearly declare its stance at a time of growing tension in Euro-Atlantic relations and issues of NATO security. Its representatives lambasted Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and the government for failing to take up clear positions on fundamental foreign-political issues, including developments in Greenland, the functioning of NATO and the security of Europe. SaS also criticised government members for failing to sufficiently address the issue of Greenland and broader geopolitical changes at a Security Council session on Wednesday morning. Krupa stated that a policy "oriented towards all four cardinal directions" deprives Slovakia of all alliances. "We mustn't be so naive to think that Slovakia will be 'wheeling and dealing' with Russia, the USA and China and that it will balance their interests somewhere here in the central European space. That's ridiculous," stated Krupa. The criticism was echoed by MP Vladimira Marcinkova (SaS), who stated that Fico has been unable to clearly formulate Slovakia's position on the situation in Greenland prior to an extraordinary summit of EU leaders. Marcinkova announced that she's submitted a second resolution to Parliament that concerns the situation in Iran. Through the resolution, the party aims to condemn human rights violations and violence against the civilian population in that country. "As early as in 2023, I was the first MP to submit a resolution that primarily pointed to what women are experiencing there ... It was passed at the time partly thanks to support from MPs of the current governing coalition, so I hope that they'll be consistent now when it comes to respecting human rights," she said. ko/df
