Kiss: Coalition Fails to Control Public Debt, Should Have Sought Confidence Vote

Bratislava, 20 January (TASR) - The coalition has decided to ignore the constitutional law, stated MP Stefan Kiss for the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party, commenting on a meeting of the House committee for finance and budget at the Slovak central bank (NBS) on Tuesday, adding that the government is unable to control public debt, so it should have immediately requested a vote of confidence.
The MP added that this hasn't happened to date and the coalition steamroller has buried any willingness to abide by the country's most important law.
According to him, the vote should have taken place at the last parliamentary session, as the debt brake rules required the government to seek a vote of confidence at the end of November. "When the ministers were unwilling to do so, I suggested that at least we, the members of the finance committee, call on them to comply with the Constitution," he emphasised.
"It's absurd that a resolution is needed for this. Even more absurd is that the committee rejected this call today. And this happened right in the building of the Slovak central bank, whose current governor, Peter Kazimir, once convinced Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to vote for the debt brake rules. The only thing this coalition cares about is keeping their own jobs," added Kiss.
