Nitra/Bratislava, 16 January (TASR) – Foxconn Slovakia will lay off hundreds of employees in Nitra, with the first of them having received their redundancy notices in December, TASR learnt on Friday. The consumer electronics manufacturer employs about 1,200 core staff at its plant in the industrial park. The Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (UPSVaR) has confirmed the mass lay-offs at the Nitra plant. According to UPSVaR, the Nitra job centre branch has registered a notified mass redundancy in the field of manufacturing consumer electronics. The mass lay-off was reported on 7 November last year. The number of employees affected is 509. "Under the Employment Services Act, it is not possible to publish information about the employer without its consent," said the office. Foxconn hasn't commented directly on the lay-offs. "Foxconn is implementing organisational changes in accordance with the law while protecting the rights and interests of its employees," said the company in a statement. The company has been operating in Nitra industrial park since 2007 under the business name Sony Slovakia, Ltd. In 2010, Sony formed a strategic alliance with Taiwanese electrical engineering giant Hon Hai Precision Industry under the Foxconn brand and sold its majority stake in the Sony Slovakia plant in Nitra. In June 2010, the company changed its name to Foxconn Slovakia, Ltd. mf/df
