Bratislava, 11 January (TASR) - The long-planned bypass around the town of Modra in Bratislava region, part of the broader Small Carpathian bypass project, is entering the design stage, TASR learnt from Bratislava region spokeswoman Lucia Forman this week.
Bratislava self-governing region signed a contract for preparing project documentation, including engineering activities aimed at obtaining a valid building permit, cooperation in public procurement, and a safety audit.
"According to the schedule, we expect to obtain a valid building permit at the end of 2026. We then plan to announce a public tender to find a contractor for the construction work. If everything goes according to plan, the work could be launched in 2027," said Bratislava region governor Juraj Droba, adding that the region is also providing the process of arranging the property and legal settlement of the land.
The project obtained a valid land-area decision in June 2025. The Modra bypass has a long and complicated history, with its start dating back to 1978. It's part of the broader Small Carpathian bypass plan, which aims to gradually relieve the towns of Svaty Jur, Pezinok and Modra, as well as the villages of Dubova, Chorvatsky Grob and Slovensky Grob (all Bratislava region) of transit traffic. It's intended to be a systemic solution to long-term traffic problems facing the entire region, not an isolated move.
