Bratislava, 10 January (TASR) - Slovakia and the United States will sign an agreement on mutual cooperation in nuclear energy on Friday (16 January) in Washington, with Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) intending to attend the signing ceremony, TASR has learnt from the prime minister himself on Saturday afternoon following the joint luncheon with President Peter Pellegrini and Parliamentary Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD). "In cooperation with our American partners, we want to build a new, huge block on the site of the existing nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice [Trnava region], which will be wholly state-owned and have a capacity of almost 1200 MWh," said Fico. The premier stated in December 2025 that he had received a written invitation from US President Donald Trump to attend a joint meeting. He announced that they want to jointly support the intergovernmental agreement between Slovakia and the US on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The Slovak government approved the agreement in September last year. It had previously been greenlighted by the European Commission. The agreement mainly covers cooperation on the civil nuclear power plant programme in Slovakia. It creates opportunities for both countries to cooperate in the areas of new modern technologies, research, exchange of experience, training of experts, and involvement of Slovak industry. am
