Bratislava, 8 January (TASR) - Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) on Thursday conveyed Slovakia's support for Denmark regarding the current situation involving Greenland during a phone call with his Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen, according to information provided to TASR by the Ministry's communications department.
"The Slovak Republic firmly insists on the need to adhere to international law and obligations arising from the United Nations Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, in all cases and without applying double standards. We reject any violation of these principles," stated Blanar.
Rasmussen informed Blanar about the most recent developments and the planned meeting with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Blanar also praised the joint statement by Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom concerning Greenland, in which they expressed their support while also stressing the key importance of security in the Arctic.
"Greenland is part of the European Union, as well as of the North Atlantic Alliance and, above all, part of the Kingdom of Denmark," said the head of Slovak diplomacy.
Blanar also thanked his Danish counterpart for the fact that Denmark held the presidency of the Council of the EU during the second half of 2025 in a constructive manner. "I appreciated Denmark's pragmatic approach and support in defending Slovak national interests, in particular as regards the REpowerEU strategy, which is unacceptable for Slovakia," said Blanar.
The US government has recently intensified its rhetoric concerning Greenland. On Tuesday (6 January), the White House stated that utilising the military remains one of the options being considered to acquire the island. However, according to media reports, Rubio stressed on Wednesday (7 January) that the USA is considering buying Greenland and that the recent statements shouldn't be perceived as suggesting military invasion.
