House Chair Rasi Views Current Model of Presidential Election as Correct

Bratislava, 8 January (TASR) - House Chair Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) has said in an interview with TASR that he views the current model of the presidential election as correct, not identifying himself with statements that the election should return to Parliament. "If the president were elected by Parliament, he would be its vassal. However, that should not happen. The president has the right to make decisions that the government may not always like. And that is good, as everything shouldn't be in the hands of one body," stated Rasi. He also pointed out that many of the countries where the president was previously elected by parliament have switched to direct elections. Junior coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman Andrej Danko in December said the presidential election should return to the hands of Parliament, as the existing model creates tension in society. ko
