Bratislava, 5 January (TASR) - Retail shops in Slovakia will be allowed to open on 6 January, Epiphany.
The change was brought about by a law amending certain pieces of legislation in connection with the consolidation of public finances, the first measures of which came into effect in November 2025. In line with the change, shops have been allowed to open on most public holidays of the year as of 1 November, 2025.
In the past, shops had to remain closed on all public holidays, i.e. 15.5 days a year. According to the new rules, shops only have to be closed on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 24 December after 12 p.m., and 25 and 26 December. However, pharmacies, petrol stations and outlets at airports and railway stations can operate even on the aforementioned 5.5 days.
