Bratislava, 10 December (TASR) - The protection and promotion of fundamental human rights form one of the key pillars of international order and peaceful coexistence, said Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) on the occasion of Human Rights Day on Wednesday, calling for strict adherence to the principles of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's communications department has informed TASR.
"Human Rights Day is not just a reminder of a historical document - it's a commitment for us to protect them today as well. As a UN-member state, Slovakia is actively pushing for the protection of human dignity and promoting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people," stated Blanar.
Blanar stated that Slovak diplomacy promotes the principles of the rule of law and supports accountability for violations of international laws. At the same time, it condemns all forms of violations of human rights, as well as of international and humanitarian law around the world. According to the minister, compliance with these laws is a "principled and consistent priority" and the basic framework for Slovakia's foreign-political activities.
The minister said that the Foreign Affairs Ministry contributes to the improvement of the human-rights situation in the world by its regular engagement in multilateral forums, international negotiations, development cooperation and humanitarian programmes. Slovakia wants to strengthen its voice within the UN Security Council, where it's applying for the post of a non-permanent member in 2028-2029.
Human Rights Day is commemorated around the world on 10 December every year, the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
