SNS Disagrees with Slovak Support for Ukraine's EU Accession

Bratislava, 7 September (TASR) - The junior coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) disagrees with Slovakia's support for Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU), SNS spokesperson Zuzana Skopcova told TASR on Saturday (6 September), adding that it is high time to accept states such as Serbia and Montenegro and to end negotiations with countries that don't belong to the EU. SNS stated this in the context of the meeting between Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Uzhhorod on Friday (5 September). At a joint press conference, Fico expressed support for a just peace in the country, Ukraine's accession to the EU and security guarantees for Ukraine. "SNS will inform its coalition partners about its stance at a coalition council meeting and will ask Premier Robert Fico to change his position. At the same time, SNS expects that the prime minister will raise the issue of negotiations with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concerning the attack by Ukrainian security forces on the Druzhba oil pipeline," stated Skopcova. The party believes that Ukraine poses a security risk to EU member states. It is not ready for membership politically or economically. The country's economy and public administration are in a 'catastrophic state', according to the party. In this context, Skopcova stated that Ukraine had 'handed over' its mineral wealth to the United States and that it is therefore questionable, in her view, how it would be able to fulfil its obligations towards the EU. am
