Bratislava, 25 August (TASR) - The Environment Ministry has launched a nationwide brown bear census which is set to be the largest in Slovakia's history, TASR reported on Monday based on a social media post published by Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (an SNS nominee).
He added that the State Nature Conservancy (SOP) has signed contracts with Slovak universities and scientific experts to participate in the census alongside the broad public, conservationists and hunters.
"The census will not be carried out by NGOs or foreign institutions, it will not cost outrageous amounts, and it will not be conducted in winter when bears are hibernating and when everything important is covered by snow, hidden from the sight of 'experts', as was the case previously. We want unfalsified, real data," Taraba said, adding that it took many months to prepare the census.
