Finance Ministry Warns of AI Deepfake Scam Using Minister's Identity

Bratislava, 21 July (TASR) – In recent weeks, videos misusing the identity of Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicky (Smer-SD) via artificial intelligence (AI) tools have increasingly appeared online. These deepfake videos are circulating on social media targeting financially less savvy members of the public and encouraging them to invest, promising quick and high returns. The Finance Ministry raised the alarm on Monday via social media, warning that these are fraudulent schemes. "The Finance Minister doesn't promote any financial products, exclusive investment opportunities, or time-limited offers for get-rich-quick or long-term earnings from minimal deposits," the ministry emphasised. According to the ministry, the aim of these deepfake videos – in which the minister's likeness and voice are misused – is to deceive unsuspecting citizens into giving up personal data and access to payment information, thereby enriching the fraudsters. These videos can create a false impression of exclusivity and urgency, promising unrealistic profits. "Unfortunately, AI tools are increasingly capable of creating highly authentic and trustworthy-looking content, but it's full of nonsense, falsehoods and dangerous claims that can harm the public," the ministry explained. The ministry once again urged social media users to verify information sources, not to fall for promises of easy money, and to manage their investment expectations realistically. "If you encounter such a video, don't follow its advice. Do not share it, and we recommend reporting it as harmful content," the ministry added. mf/df
