Moscow, May 9 (TASR) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has no power to criticise a premier of a sovereign country, Slovak Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said on Friday in reaction to critical statements regarding his visit to Moscow on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe made by Kallas earlier on Friday, the Government Office's press department has informed TASR.
Kallas on Friday morning stated that Fico is on the wrong side of history by meeting Kremlin chief Putin, on whose orders Russian troops invaded neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022. "I really don't get it. All those who support freedom, independence and all European values should be in Ukraine today, on Europe Day, and not in Moscow," she said.
The Slovak premier explained that he is in Moscow to pay tribute to the more than 60,000 Red Army soldiers who fell while liberating Slovakia. "It's not clear to me what these brave people have to do with the current international situation," he wrote.
Fico stated that Kallas "as a high-ranking EC official has absolutely no power to criticise a sovereign premier of a sovereign country who approaches the whole European agenda in a constructive manner". He also expressed his disagreement with the policy of the "new Iron Curtain", which Kallas, according to Fico, is working intensively on.
