Bratislava Police Warn of WhatsApp Fraud Cases

Bratislava, 22 May (TASR) - Bratislava region police recorded several cases of fraud across Bratislava region on Thursday (21 May) involving the WhatsApp mobile application, TASR has been informed by Bratislava Regional Police spokesperson Silvia Simkova. "The messages appeared to have been sent by a contact that the victims had genuinely saved in their phones. The message contained a greeting and a request to borrow €1,000," the spokesperson explained. She added that after a positive response, another message followed containing a bank account number to which the money should be sent. After the transfer, the fake friend also requested confirmation of payment. "A victim found this suspicious and contacted his friend, who explained that he hadn't asked for anything and that the victim had fallen prey to fraud," she added. Police are urging the public to always verify information concerning their finances by telephone when acquaintances request money from them. mf/df
