Smer-SD to Propose Re-introduction of Banking Levy

Bratislava, May 23 (TASR) - Opposition's Smer-SD party will propose the re-introduction of banking levy as a way to finance the anti-inflation measures because the aid for the people, as proposed by the Government, is inadequate and "ridiculous", Smer-SD chair Robert Fico said at a press briefing on Monday. According to Fico, the banking levy should bring at least €150 million to state coffers this year and about €300 million in 2023. "It'll be important for us to see the banking levy passed. We certainly won't embrace anything coming at the expense of towns, villages and regions," said Fico, who would have no qualms to embrace even "higher banking levy rates" and would have felt free to "collect €300 million as early as this year" if he had been in power. Fico rejects the notion that the introduction of the banking levy might lead to higher banking fees. "Banks hike their fees even without any banking levy," noted the Smer-SD chair. Party vice-chair Ladislav Kamenicky pointed out that the Government enjoys excessive income from the VAT collection, for instance, in the wake of growing prices. "The inflation will yield the Government at least an additional one billion or up to 1.5 billion euros. The people will foot this bill in the form of increased prices, via the VAT," he said and proposed that the Government could use this increased income to finance the anti-inflation aid along with the banking levy income. mf
