Chambers of Commerce and Employers Slam Social Package

Bratislava, February 18 (TASR) - Employers associations and chambers of commerce operating in Slovakia are concerned about the way in which the Government is promoting changes in family allowances, pensions and highway stickers. According to them, hastily approved legal amendments and proposed fast-track legislative proceedings for them is in contradiction with the principles of the predictable legislative procedures that the Government pledged to pursue in its manifesto. "We resolutely object to public finances being misused for campaigning," reads the press release sent by chambers of commerce and employers to the media on Tuesday. "Changes have been made without any previous public discussion, standard inter-departmental review or talks within the Economic and Social Council," reads the press release. The representatives view the argument concerning an alleged threat to social rights guaranteed by the Constitution as purpose-made and absurd. They said that if the situation was actually that hot, the effect of the amendment to the law on family allowances would have been set immediatelly, and not as late as in ten months. Representatives of employers and chambers of commerce pointed to the fact that the past 46 months of the current electoral term have provided sufficient time for changes in the pension system and highway network financing. At the same time there don't seem to be any key changes that would produce a sudden "threat to social rights". "Therefore, we see no legitimate or rational grounds for approving the aforementioned changes by avoiding a standard legislative procedure, with the use of fast-track proceedings, in Parliament," they added. ko/df
