OLaNO: Agriculture Ministry Supports More Logging than Forest Restoration

Bratislava, May 16 (TASR) - Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matecna (Slovak National Party/SNS) supports more logging than the restoration of forests, as a recent €22-million call of her ministry to apply for subsidies from the EU funds seems to fit more logging companies than those who'd protect forests, figures from Opposition party OLaNO said at a press conference on Thursday.
According to OLaNO MP Veronika Remisova, almost one-third of companies in the call have received subsidies exceeding their annual incomes. In addition, some of these firms were set up shortly before the call was made, she said.
"A large part of the [overall] amount has been given to big companies," said Remisova, adding that the self-employed and forest land associations are in far more need of state support.
