SaS Wants the Election of Constitutional Court Judges to be Public

Bratislava, January 20 (TASR) - The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party wishes the election of Constitutional Court judge candidates to be public, according to MP Alojz Baranik (SaS). Baranik pointed out that aside from legislative and supervisory functions, the Parliament also has a representative function through which it carries out the will of voters. An inherent component of the representative function should be public oversight. "That's why we have systems in place in Parliament, designed to check how individual MPs voted, so that their voters can make up their minds whether or not to cast their votes for them in the next election," said Baranik. Baranik claimed that a secret parliamentary vote doesn't exist anywhere else in the democratic world. "The best example is the recent vote on the nomination for a US Supreme Court judge, which was held in front of live TV cameras," he added. mf/mcs
