Lajcak on UN Migration Compact: Arbour's Statement Says Everything

Brussels, December 10 (TASR-correspondent) - The EU's Foreign Affairs Council, which met on Monday in Brussels, was deprived of several heads of diplomacy, who participated in the Marrakech intergovernmental conference to agree the UN Global Compact for Migration, Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) told TASR on the same day. "My opinion on this is quite clear," pointed out Lajcak, who was present at the finalisation of this global agreement in July as the 72nd UN General Assembly President and who was willing to resign from his post over the issue of Slovakia's non-participation in the conference. "I noted the statement made by Secretary-General of the UN Conference in Marrakech Louise Arbour that says everything in my opinion," said Lajcak. Canadian lawyer Louise Arbour, acting as United Nations Special Representative for International Migration, said that the attitude of the countries, which have withdrawn from the migration agreement, although they agreed with it in July, was regrettable. She pointed out that talks on the migration pact in summer ended with a consensus, and admitted that she was "a little irritated" by the spread of incorrect information about the text of the migration agreement. am/mcs
