Fico: Socialism with Human Face Could Have Brought Fantastic Results

Bratislava, August 21 (TASR) - If the idea of "socialism with a human face" had been implemented and Alexander Dubcek fulfilled the goals of the Prague Spring reform process, Slovakia and Czechoslovakia would have been much further than Austria today, stated Smer-SD Chairman Robert Fico on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. In a video posted on a social network, Fico pointed out that the invasion had ruined plans that envisaged the possibility of free travel, respect for human rights, the development of small and medium-sized businesses, and ruined the possibility of a better life. "Socialism with a human face could have worked and could have produced fantastic results," said Fico, who came on Wednesday to pay tribute to the grave of Alexander Dubcek, the central figure in the reform process in the second half of the 1960s. At the same time, the Smer-SD chairman expressed the conviction that the events of the Prague Spring and the efforts of its leaders contributed to the fact that Slovaks can now live in a democratic state. am
