SVPS: Swine Fever Localised in Infection Area, But More Cases Found

Bratislava, August 20 (TASR) - The number of African swine fever virus (ASFV) cases has increased, with one domestically bred pig infected in the village of Brehov in Trebisov district (Kosice region) and two more cases among wild boars, said State Veterinary and Food Administration executive director Jozef Bires at a press conference on Tuesday. "It's in the village of Brehov, where this is actually the third case. We also have two cases among wild boars. However, swine fever is still localised in the so-called infection area, which hasn't expanded. We're slaughtering pigs in three villages today ... We'll see if any of them will test positive for swine fever. It will be important for vets to know whether the infection is localised or is spreading further," said Bires. According to Bires, it is being confirmed that wild boars are the main source of infection in southeastern Slovakia. "If two factors come together, namely an ASFV-positive wild boar and an inattentive breeder, it can only mean the contamination of domestic pig breeding," he added. am/df
